Fastener Materials: A Closer Look at Low Carbon Steel

When taking the first step into finding fastening solutions, your biggest consideration will be what type of material will be required for the application. The main options you have for steel are Low Carbon Steel, Medium Carbon Steel, Alloy Steel, Stainless Steel, or Austenitic Stainless Steel. Performance of each type will be dictated by the requirements of the application.

Carbon Steel
Carbon Steel is inexpensive and it has a broad range of capabilities. That is why the majority of fasteners use carbon steel.

The mechanical properties of these fasteners are based on the amount of carbon in the fastener; that is why these fasteners are classified into one of three groups: low carbon steel, medium carbon steel or alloy steel. Let’s take a closer look at Low Carbon Steel.

Low Carbon Steel
Low carbon steel contains less than 0.25% carbon. It is very ductile, easily machined and can be welded. The low percentage of carbon lends itself to lower strength. Tensile strength typically will range from 60,000 psi to 80,000 psi (410 MPa to 550 MPa).

SAE Grade 2 (metric class 4.6, 4.8, 5.8) is usually made from low carbon steel with AISI grades 1006, 1010, 1016, 1018, 1022 and 1035.

Low Carbon Steel is a common material to use in fasteners. There are many advantages to using it. However, there are also other options for fastener materials. Deciding on the perfect fastener can be a challenge, but we’re here to help! ecosyn®-fix screws give you reliability and efficiency so you can save time for your many other tasks. ecosyn®-fix can save you assembly time and management costs as well as give you reliability in your application. Let’s take a deeper look at how ecosyn®-fix screws do this.

Cost Savings
The reason ecosyn®-fix screws are used worldwide is because they truly do save you money. These screws were built to decrease preparation times and create a faster assembly. This is achieved because the ecosyn®-fix screw is one fastener instead of many; ecosyn®-fix combines a screw, a helical spring and a flat washer all into one fastening solution. This allows you to save money on materials by reducing your bill of materials, and also save significant amounts of time, reducing labor costs.

Reliability
With the ecosyn®-fix screw, you also get increased reliability. Your products will be able to hold up better and they will truly be something you can count on. One of the key aspects of this increased reliability is the integrated washer. This washer is shake-proof and vibration-resistant because it’s already attached to the screw. Other advantages of the integrated washer include reduced risk of crevice corrosion, optimum bearing area to cover elongated and large through holes and joint relaxation is compensated.

We work to develop solutions to some of the toughest fastening problems. Sometimes the problems are less about the fastener itself and more about cost and time savings. With the ecosyn®-fix screw you get both cost and time savings with one easy-to-use product. This product can help you fill in the gaps in your project easily and efficiently.

Benefits of ecosyn®-plast Screws

ecosyn®-plast Screws

There are many factors to consider when determining what kind of fastener you want to use in a project. Recently, there has been a desire to make products lighter, and the type of fastener can play a key role in the weight of a product. That is one of the reasons why ecosyn®-plast is a good fastening option.

You may think that ecosyn®-plast is only used for thermoplastics, but that does not necessarily have to be the case. ecosyn®-plast screws were created through the experience in thermoplastic screwing, but they have many advantages for applications outside of thermoplastic screwing as well.

Check out some of the benefits of ecosyn®-plast fasteners:

  • High durability of screw joints under various conditions in different thermoplastic applications

Surface Pressure Under the Screw Head

surface pressure solutions with Bossard

There are a lot of factors that go into the surface pressure under the screw head in soft materials. Some of these do effect the production process, the alignment of fibers in the material and the surface finishing and temperature changes.

Because there are a lot of factors, it is not possible to precisely define the permissible surface pressure for a particular type of material used to make a component, but there are some things that you can do to the screw design to help reduce the surface pressure.

The following can be used to reduce the surface pressure:

  • Use of flange screws and flange nuts
  • Chamfered holes (field investigations have shown up to a 20% increase in permissible surface pressure)
  • Select a fine hole-through hole to ISO 273

Flange nuts and flange screws have been shown to reduce the surface pressure. Check out some of the advantages below!

Advantages of flange screws and flange nuts:

  • Less intrusion
  • Clamping force in the fastening during mounting tends to remain stable
  • Flange products are more economic than large washers under normal screws and nuts (fewer fastening elements and quicker assembly).
  • Flange screws and nuts allow greater hole tolerances and so are more economically efficient
  • Flange nuts have a better stability against shaking than normal screws and nuts

Mechanical Properties for Screws

mechanical properties of screws

There are a lot of technical terms we throw around when it comes to the quality of screws and making sure they hold up. We have defined a few below so you know what factors to look for when fastening together your next project.

Tensile Strength
This is how much axial load a screw can withstand without breaking.

Yield Strength
Yield strength is the amount of resistance of a material to plastic deformation, so it determines how much stress a screw must withstand with the bolt being permanently elongated.

Proof Strength
Proof Load is the amount of resistance of a material to plastic deformation, so it determines how much stress a screw must withstand without being permanently elongated.

Tensile Strength under Wedge Loading
Bolts and screws are subject to the wedge test to measure ductility and head integrity. The test is performed by placing a wedge below the screw head and the screw must break in the thread or in the shank.

Head Soundness
The screw head must not have signs of cracking after being formed being cold formed.

Hardness
There are different tests for hardness like Vickers hardness, Brinell hardness or Rockwell hardness, but they all measure the resistance of the material to penetration by a test body.

Notch Impact Strength
This is the impact energy consumed during notch impact testing. Testing gives information on micro-structure, steel making process, inclusion content and more.

Surface Flaws
Surface defects can be multiple things. They can arise in the semi-finished product and those would be called slag inclusions, material folds and die marks. Also there could be cracks or crystalline breaks without inclusion of foreign materials.

Decarburization
This is the loss of carbon at the surface of ferrous materials.

We hope these definitions helped you learn a little bit more about the technical terms that can be thrown around in different projects. If you have any questions, contact us at ProvenProductivity@bossard.com.

Advantages of BCT® Multigrip

Advantages-of-BCT-multigrip

BCT® stands for Bulge Control Technology. The idea behind this is a new construction of rivet nuts that better fit where you need them. BCT® has four cross holes on the shank, so it can control where the bulge starts to form. This allows for the best fitting into irregular holes.

The BCT®* Multigrip is a type of BCT® rivet nut. The Multigrip gives you a grip range that is much better than standard rivet nuts. In fact, the grip range is almost three times of a standard rivet nut. This allows one rivet nut to cover different grip ranges.

The importance of that lies with the cost savings and flexibility. The BCT® Multigrip can be used in applications where you would normally need several rivet nut sizes because of different material thicknesses. With the BCT® Multigrip, you don’t need all those other sizes; you can have a reduced rivet nut inventory which is more cost-effective for you. You can also have more design flexibility with the BCT® Multigrip because you won’t be forced into one thickness.

What is the best kind of application to use BCT® Multigrip? Well, these rivet nuts have controlled deformation of the bulge, so they can be used in many materials. They are ideal for application on thin materials or brittle and soft materials like plastic, rubber and composites.

With Bossard, you know it works well and hard for you. If you have questions specific to your project and how BCT® Multigrip can benefit you, contact us at ProvenProductivity@bossard.com.
